When you’ve been planning your first trip to Italy for a long time, and you’ve chartered self-drive boats all over the world, naturally expectations for this trip were very high…and we’re thrilled to say that we were not disappointed! This was one of our very best boating vacations ever!
Our crew included two Canadian couples, all experienced sailors, and we chartered a Clipper for a one-way cruise from Casale to Precenicco in late May 2018. It was a perfect time of year – warm enough for dining outdoors in shirt sleeves, but early enough in the season to avoid to the summer holiday crowds.
There were a lot of things we loved about our cruise, but they all stem from our chosen itinerary and the variety of the destinations and the diversity of waterways we traveled including rivers, canals, salt marshes/flat and lagoons!
Each morning began with a few hours of leisurely cruising in the morning sunshine. By midday we arrived at our next destination with time enough to head out for a tour on the rented bicycles before returning to the boat to refresh and enjoy appetizers on the upper deck. Evenings were passed ashore indulging in the culinary delights of the Veneto and Fruili regions.
Our first stop was the town dock at Casale sul Sile. A nice way to start our week with a relaxing 30- minute cruise from the base to this pretty little town for provisions, an afternoon to explore, and dinner ashore.
Next stop was the exclusive mooring at Mazzorbo-Burano in the Venetian Lagoon. One of our favourite destinations, from here we explored Murano via vaporetto. But the real treat was next morning when we took a sunrise walking tour of Burano, only a footbridge away. Here we virtually had Burano to ourselves long before the crowds of tourists arrive from Venice. To see the island at this time of day was a rare privilege and a photographer’s delight.
Our next destination was inland to San Donà di Piave, another pretty little town with a deep history that was easily discovered on bikes.
The next two nights we explored the beach resort towns of Caorle, and Lignano Riviera. The staff at the Marina Uno were very accommodating and the town of Caorle was a delight! It was a little cool for swimming in May, but the beaches of the Adriatic would definitely be a draw in the summer.
Our next day was a navigation of the Marano Lagoon and a visit the UNESCO world heritage village of Aquileia. This was a remarkable destination and the other favourite port on our cruise.
Our final stop was at a restaurant on the Stella River, offering free mooring with dinner, before we reluctantly returned the boat at the base at Precenicco.
The three words that keep coming to mind are easy, relaxing and special…
The team at houseboat.it were very easy to work with. All of our communications were by email and messages promptly returned. There was no difficulty in conversing in English. The boat was comfortable, clean and in good repair. The Clipper is not the newest model, but it had all the features we were looking for; two staterooms, two heads, outside driving and dining. It was well appointed and to the advertised standard. The base staff were very accommodating and the chart and boat briefings were informative and helpful. The charts and guidebooks provided were valuable resources.
I have no reservations in recommending this type of vacation, houseboat.it/LeBoat and this itinerary! My only wish is that I was planning another trip in 2019 to do it all over again…and not change one single thing!
